Indianapolis Airport Community Days Public Tours

Curious about the $1.1 billion new Indianapolis International Airport? Get a free sneak peak! Attend the airport’s Community Days Open House on Saturday, October 11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 12 from noon until 4 p.m.

Explore the new airport and familiarize yourself with this outstanding facility—inside and out—BEFORE it opens for departing flights on November 12.

Take self-guided tours at your own pace, exploring the Ticketing Hall, Civic Plaza, security checkpoints, concourses, baggage claim, and more. You will have the opportunity to see areas of the terminal normally off-limits to the general public, including the massive baggage processing area. In addition, airport emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and snow-clearing equipment will be on display.

  1. Groups of any size are welcome. Self-guided tours will depart every half hour. Select your tour time:
    1. Saturday, October 11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
    2. Sunday, October 12 from noon until 4 p.m.
  2. Click the link at the upper right corner that says "Register Now!"
  3. After you complete the registration process, check your e-mail for your Community Days Tour itinerary.
  4. Print your itinerary and bring it to any ticket counter to get your boarding pass for the self-guided tour.
  5. Arrive at the ticket counter at least 10 minutes prior to your tour start time.

Getting to the new airport is a breeze! Take I-70 west to Exit 68 which is the first exit west of I-465. Watch for signs directing you to the parking garage.  The new address is 7800 Col. H. Weir Cook Memorial Drive.

Please visit and click on "we're moving" for new airport information.  Under "maps and directions" you will find an interstate map.  Map assistance like Google, Mapquest, Yahoo, etc. may not direct you appropriately at this time.

NOTE: Exit 68 will only be open during the Community Days weekend and will then close until the airport formally opens on November 11, 2008 for departing passengers. Do NOT go to the current airport located at Sam Jones Expressway (the former Airport Expressway) & High School Road

Parking at the airport is a breeze! During the Community Days Open House, all parking is free. Free garage parking is available and you can enter the terminal from the pedestrian walkway on the third floor of the garage. You may also choose to park in a surface lot and take the shuttle to the terminal.

Do I need to individually register everyone in my group?  Why?

Individually registering each guest in your group is necessary and appreciated. Over 15,000 guests are expected to tour the airport during Community Days weekend and the actual number expected during each tour time is important for crowd control and traffic flow around the airport.

How do I go back to add another person AFTER I’ve already registered?

Additional people can be added to a registration by logging in using the e-mail address and password originally used to create the account.  On the itinerary page, click on ADD ANOTHER PERSON and a new profile page will appear.  Click “no e-mail address available” to keep all registrants grouped under the same e-mail address.  Provide the required information and choose the tour time.  Repeat these steps for each additional registrant.  Then follow the prompts to COMPLETE REGISTRATION.  Once you’ve completed your registrations, a confirmation e-mail will automatically be sent to your e-mail address.

I received an itinerary, but should I be receiving a ticket or boarding pass?

Your itinerary (e-mail confirmation) that you receive via email is your “ticket” to the self-guided tour.  Bring your itinerary to any ticket counter when you check in the day of your tour and you’ll receive a “boarding pass” directing you to either Concourse A or B to begin your tour.  Remember to arrive 10 minutes prior to your tour start time to check-in at any ticket counter.

I can’t open/print my downloaded itinerary.

Your itinerary will automatically be e-mailed to you when you complete your registration and every time you make a change to your registration.  You do not need to download your itinerary.  If you cannot print your itinerary, please plan on attending your self-guided tour anyway.  We have your registration(s) in our system so you are accounted for.

How can I change/cancel my tour time?

Tour times can be changed at any time by logging in using the e-mail address and password originally used to create the account. Click on EDIT ITINERARY at the top of the itinerary page.  Click “remove” to the right of the tour time that you no longer wish to attend and then “remove” again on the confirmation screen.  Check the new tour time and click SIGN UP FOR SELECTED ITEMS.  Follow the steps to complete your registration. You’ll receive another e-mail confirming your itinerary with your new tour time.

Where will I park?

Free parking will be available in the new airport parking garage during Community Days weekend.  When arriving for your tour, watch for directional signage as you enter the airport property.  Please allow about 20 minutes to park and walk into the airport so you are not rushed to the Ticketing Hall.

Are strollers allowed?

Strollers are allowed and recommended since it’s a walking tour of a large area.  However, the airport will not have strollers available to rent during Community Days.

Will wheelchairs be allowed and/or available?

Wheelchairs and electric scooters are allowed.  We encourage you to come prepared as this is a self-guided, walking tour.  The airport will provide a limited number of wheelchairs per shift for guests.  Additionally, no advance reservations for these can be accepted.  Wheelchairs will be available on a first come-first serve basis.

Will cameras be allowed?

Photography will be allowed during Community Days.  These photos should be used for personal use only and not for profit.

How long should my self-guided tour last?

The self-guided tours are scheduled to last for 2 hours; however, since the tours are self-guided, each guest will be able to tour at their own pace.  Take your time getting familiar with the airport, but please respect the 2-hour time limit.

Are there any dress requirements for Community Days?

Remember to wear long pants and comfortable, closed toe shoes since the airport is a construction site.  Comfortable shoes are highly recommended since there is quite a bit of walking to travel throughout the entire airport.

Are the concessionaires going to be open during Community Days?

Please note there will be no retail or food service vendors open during Community Days.
